Understanding GPS and Location Settings in Ok Alone

1. Required Phone Permissions

Ok Alone needs permission to access your location only when a shift is running. Grant these permissions at first login:

Android

  • Location: Allow all the time

iPhone

  • Location: Always

  • Notifications: Allow

After changing any permissions, restart the app and any active shifts. If settings won’t apply, reinstall the app and accept defaults.

Please Note: The Allow all the time/Always permission means we can update your location when the shift is running and the phone is in the background. We will never access your location unless there is an active shift.

2. When Tracking Is Active

  • You are invisible on the map until you tap Start Shift.

  • After starting, your GPS pin appears and updates throughout your shift.

  • Tap End Shift to stop location updates and hide your pin.

3. In-App GPS Modes

Choose the mode that balances accuracy and battery life:

  • GPS High

    • Updates every 10 seconds, even without cell signal.

    • Use only when you need near-continuous tracking.

  • GPS Normal (Recommended)

    • Updates every 1–2 minutes.

    • Provides accurate location with minimal battery impact.

  • Non-GPS

    • Sends approximate location at regular intervals.

    • Maximizes battery life. Use only if precise location isn’t required.

  • Off

    • No location updates. Puts you at risk during an emergency.

To change modes: open the app’s Settings menu (☰) and select Location Mode.

4. Optimized GPS Handling

Ok Alone leverages your device’s native location services to conserve power:

  • Adaptive Updates: Location frequency increases when you’re moving quickly and decreases when you’re stationary.

  • Battery Saver: If your battery is low, update intervals widen automatically to preserve charge.

5. What Location Data We Access

  • We record GPS coordinates only during an active shift.

  • Your monitor sees your live location solely to verify safety and dispatch help if needed.

  • No background tracking occurs outside of shifts.
