Using iPhone Satellite SMS with OK Alone

With iPhone 14 and later (running iOS 18 or higher), Apple has introduced Messages via Satellite. This lets you send and receive text messages when you’re completely out of Wi-Fi and mobile coverage. OK Alone can use this feature to help you stay connected and update your status safely when you’re off-grid.

This guide explains how it works with OK Alone and what to expect.

When Does Satellite SMS Apply?

Satellite SMS is only used if:

• You are using an iPhone 14 or newer with iOS 18+.

• You are located in a supported region (currently U.S., Canada, and Mexico).

• You have no Wi-Fi or mobile data coverage.

In this situation, OK Alone’s Limited Coverage Mode will activate, giving you the option to send your check-in by SMS

How It Works with OK Alone

1. Try to Check In as Usual

   • Open the OK Alone app and attempt your check-in or status update.

2. App Detects No Coverage

   • If there’s no data/Wi-Fi, Limited Coverage Mode appears.

   • Choose Send SMS from the pop-up.

3. iPhone Switches to Messages

   • OK Alone automatically prepares a text message to the OK Alone status number for your country.

   • Your iPhone will detect there’s no signal and prompt you to connect to a satellite.

4. Aim at the Sky

   • Follow the on-screen instructions from Apple.

   • Hold your phone outside with a clear view of the sky/horizon until the message is sent.

5. Confirm in OK Alone

   • Return to the OK Alone app and tap Manual Update → Yes to confirm your update was sent.

Regional Availability

• Apple currently supports U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

• Other regions will be added as Apple and carriers gain regulatory approval.

• If you are outside these regions, OK Alone still supports satellite check-ins through devices like ZOLEO or SPOT X.
